Interviewing BDSM Porn Master, Magick

Posted On Friday, December 10th, 2010 By H0les_23

As an addition to this blog focused on my journey into BDSM porn and my own explorations of BDSM, what better then to hear a few words from a man who has been in the scene since before I learned to read!? Magick of Shadow Slaves and The Pain Files is not only a director of the company that employs me, but is one of my most trusted resources, mentors, and a great friend of mine; and he agreed to do an interview (or two) for me to be able to further share with you some insight and behind the scenes knowledge of the content I’m working with in Cranky Media. The following is my first interview with this mastermind behind it all.

I Present to you…

Interviewing Magick Banner

How long have you been making BDSM porn?

Commercially since 2002. I helped to found the first company I worked with, but I was originally working as a videographer and designer, rather than a performer. My first appearance in front of the camera didn’t come until the end of 2003, in the movie ‘Red’, which can still be found on ShadowSlaves, and even that was pretty much a cameo appearance.

That first company split in half in 2004, genuinely due to artistic differences. Our remit from the start had been to make real BDSM movies the way we do it at home, but we had failed to consider that we might not all do it the same way, and when I started becoming involved in the actual productions it soon became clear that the others really didn’t like the stuff I was interested in. So about half of those early movies are now available on ShadowSlaves. I believe the rest are now only available on DVD or pay for download, since the site started by my original partners is no longer in existence, but I could be wrong. Surreally, the original site (we-train-sluts) is now a page for railway enthusiasts.

Obviously I’ve been involved in BDSM in general far longer – since 1985.

What made you want to start making your own films?

Well my dream has always been to make a living from something I’d be doing anyway, regardless of the financial incentives. That might sound lazy but I think it’s a pretty good life goal for anyone really, and you’re bound to be better at your job if it’s something you genuinely love. Obviously, whatever you do there will be days you don’t feel like working, but my personal guide has always been to ask whether I’d continue doing it if the money stopped.

For most of my life that translated into writing and playing music, but since that rarely made enough money to live on, I ended up supplementing it with website design. Being on the BDSM scene inevitably meant that when friends considered putting a site together, I was a handy choice as a scene friendly designer, so they roped me in (pun intended).

I didn’t give up on the music altogether, but I pretty soon realised that filming BDSM scenes was a more viable way to survive than music, without selling out on the dream of doing something I loved.

I also believed we had something to offer that was fairly new and fresh. I won’t deny my influences in terms of BDSM pornography, but they were and still are a minority of the genre, and I feel I have something new to bring to the table, so it still seems worthwhile to film it.

How do you find and what do you look for in a girl interested in filming with you?

To be honest they usually find us. We have a lot of girls approaching us wanting to be on the sites, and we probably still turn down the majority. Obviously shooting for ShadowSlaves or The Pain Files is not really just a modeling job. It’s necessary to be genuinely submissive and/or a masochist/painslut, who likes my style of play, and is able to get something real from pain and humiliation. It’s really not the sort of thing anyone should put themselves through for money, so most of my negotiation with new girls is aimed at making sure they are doing it because they want to, rather than because they want the money or modeling exposure.

Beyond being genuinely submissive, we obviously do have some commercial pressures too. We will work with girls who don’t fit the standard porn mould in terms of appearance, including larger and older girls, since their attitude and reason for being there is more important to us, but commercial pressures do put limits on that ethos. We still need to be able to publicize the site, and attract interest from people who won’t get the chance to understand the whole range of intense emotions involved in a scene from an advertising clip, so unfortunately we do have to consider commercial looks to some extent, albeit less than most.

We also do our best to work with the same girls regularly, rather than chasing down new faces all the time, although there has been an influx of new girls this year. This is intentional, as obviously when it comes to hard BDSM the better I understand a girl, the more communication we have and the more she comes to trust me, the better it will be for everyone, not least the viewers.

We maintain the site http://www.bdsmmodel.com/ where girls who are interested can contact us to talk about the possibility of being on the sites, and just very recently we have started occasionally making first contact if someone really catches our attention, but the majority of the girls still get involved via word of mouth, particularly talking to the existing ShadowSlaves.

Where do the ideas generally come from that we see in your films and images?

Wow that’s a really broad question. A lot of different places really.

A lot of the more established girls, and even some newcomers, will give us ideas themselves, that excite them and they want to try, and I’ll usually try to cater to that, since scenes always have a much hotter feel if the girl is really excited or scared from the start.

In terms of the longer term girls who have really built a level of trust we will often negotiate a scene that plays directly on their fears and phobias or weaknesses.

The members of the sites also make requests fairly frequently either in the forums or by mailing me, which again I do my best to fulfill where they are feasible and we have a suitable girl available.

Otherwise, I guess it’s from my head – either something I want to try or see, or something I think one of the girls will really respond to; or sometimes just crazy ideas that come out of conversation or watching other people’s work (or off camera play).

I try not to directly rip off ideas I see in other people’s movies or pictures, but I find I’ll very often watch a scene and think ‘oh man, that would have been brilliant if they had just done that’ – so I’ll go away and do it. It’s a lot easier to see brilliant twists in a scene when the scene already exists of course, so I’m not criticizing anyone else’s work there – in fact I even do the same with my own movies. I’ll sometimes watch something in the edit and think ‘damn why didn’t I do that?’ – so of course next time I will.

Are your scenes scripted?

Not really. We often talk about ‘the script’ but in the vast majority of cases that will comprise a few ideas, scribbled on a scrap of paper at the last minute, based on discussions with the girl, members’ or models’ requests, new ideas etc. That scrap of paper will then be largely ignored and used only as a mnemonic to give the scene a basic shape or focus in my head – from thereon in, it’s simply a real BDSM scene between me and the girl, and it will go wherever our head-space and her reactions lead us.

When you’re shooting for Shadow Slaves and The Pain Files, what is the common goal you have with every set? What do you always want to make happen?

There isn’t really anything I *always* want to happen. The goal is to do the best possible scene with that person, both for me, her and the viewer. To make it as intense as possible for both of us, and deliver something that will blow people’s minds. OK so that *is* always the aim after all, but I suspect that’s a bit more vague than you were hoping for.

There are a few things that always work for me… genuine fear, and crying come to mind. Those are just things that really speak to my own sexuality, so obviously when either happens, the scene immediately hooks me deeper in, which can only be a good thing for all concerned.

I also like the girl to orgasm. We don’t fake orgasms, or in fact anything, so there are not orgasms in every scene, and indeed I know from feedback that some of our members don’t like to see direct pleasure from the girl, but if a girl is into it enough to come, from my perspective I know it’s working well.

OK re-reading what I’ve just written I guess that’s why the original strapline on ShadowSlaves was ‘Real pain, real tears, real orgasms, real fear’ – I suppose that still sums up what I’m trying for.

I also love coming up with genuinely original, or at least highly unusual ideas. Maybe things that are not commonly sexualised, and attempting to create new ways to look at sex. But obviously that’s more like a rare gem when it succeeds, rather than something I could hope for in every single production.

What sets your work for Shadow Slaves and The Pain Files apart from so many other sites focused on BDSM porn?

Imagination and reality!

I’m not going to try to claim that every other producer out there is less creative or real than us, but I think it’s not unreasonable to discount probably 85% of the genre in that one sweeping statement.

Those of us who are making BDSM porn that is filmed from genuine BDSM scenes with people genuinely into BDSM are a distinct minority. Those that try to genuinely get into the submissive’s head and do something real and intense rather than relying on what they are personally used to, or just using BDSM to spice up a hardcore sex scene, are a smaller sub group. Those members of that minority who dare to push the boundaries and do anything original or different, in their own style, because it is genuinely what they want to do, rather than because it fits some kind of business model are very rare indeed.

I don’t claim we are the only company that go about things in this way, but there aren’t that many of us – and the beauty of being in a minority defined by originality and creativity is that we’re all different stylistically to each other.

There is also a level where ShadowSlaves is like an extended family. Working with the same girls on such intensely personal scenes inevitably leads to much closer connections than most modeling jobs. The more established girls, and indeed some of the newcomers, rapidly become close friends, and the internal ‘scene’ and support system of myself and ‘the ShadowSlaves’ is quite astonishing and deeply satisfying. Again I’m aware that we are not the only site in the genre that can boast this kind of comraderie and closeness between a large number of the people who become involved, but it’s certainly not normal in the world of porn production, and serves once again to make the whole experience more real rather than just contrived entertainment.

I’m no good at the favorites thing myself so I wont put you through that, but can you tell us about a few of your movies/scenes that really stood out to you, and why they did?

Well I’m really happy to be able to say that I actually think our latest stuff is our best. I know that sounds like a shameless plug, but I’m really excited about the movies we have coming up. The last two I edited were ‘Relentless’ with Emily Sharpe for ShadowSlaves, which was a scene she asked to do herself, and is one of the most intense, dark and frankly disturbing things we have ever shot; and ‘Drain Slave’ with Emma for The Pain Files, which comes closest to expressing my own tastes in a pure (and remarkably brutal) way, of anything to date. We have also shot three movies with a new girl from the USA called Mei who is one of the most genuinely masochistic people I have ever encountered, and all three movies really raise the bar. Also of course, this year we have moved to hi-definition movies, which are looking amazing, and really draw you into the action, so it’s a very exciting time for me creatively.

In terms of productions that are already published, of course some really stand out in my memory.

‘Trash’ starring Emma-Louise on ShadowSlaves is by far our best known and notorious movie, and I think the closest we have come to something truly original. I have seen other companies mimic the idea since, but I’m still not aware of anyone sexualizing the degradation of a woman by covering her in garbage, shoving disgusting rotting food inside her and force feeding her complete filth, prior to our filming that movie.

‘Revulsion’ with Crystel-Lei (again from ShadowSlaves) is in many ways a more extreme example of the same, this time adding worms and maggots into the mix, and indeed happened as a direct response to Trash, when our members called for us to take it even further in the forum and Crystel publicly volunteered to be the subject.

From The Pain Files ‘The Headshaving’ has to stand out. Michiko had taken seven years to grow her beautiful dreadlocks and was inordinately proud of them, so having Shadark cut them off and shave her head completely bald while all the time she had to suck his cock was pretty damn intense.

‘The Interrogation’ with Nimue from The Pain Files also stands out as by far the heaviest scene we had done at the time – that was truly mind blowing for everyone involved.

I guess other stand-out scenes would be the violent bullying double-top with Jay, that we subjected Cherry Forever to, as her wake-up call (directly from sleep into SM) in the morning in ‘Rude Awakening’ (ShadowSlaves), The huge four part odyssey of ‘Training Camp’ starring Nimue and Chaos (ShadowSlaves) which was edited down from a single 16 hour day of intense punishment and torture, ‘Phobia’ starring Filthy Shaz (ShadowSlaves) in which she was simply chained to a wall and covered in slugs, worms and snails, but is amazingly intense due to her deep phobia of the same, and the neglected classic ‘Tag Team’ (ShadowSlaves) in which a blindfolded jay was double topped without her knowledge by myself and Elohim (she didn’t know Elohim, her real life Dom, was going to be in the movie, so is completely disorientated by his doing things in his style when she assumes it’s me, and my voice coming from the wrong place etc etc.)

Thank You very much for answering these questions for me Sir, I just have one more. I know that you have had several people who are not into BDSM fall shock at learning about what you do. What reservations do you most commonly find that people have with your work, and what says you about those?

Actually I’ve found most vanilla folk to be surprisingly accepting of what I do to be honest, albeit maybe because they would never actually watch it. I find more anger and opposition from people who are on the BDSM scene, or into pornography, and cannot get their heads around my style.

There have been cases of strangers sending death threats etc., as a result of clips from ‘Trash’ going viral and urban myths starting about it being real spousal abuse (or in one case my daughter!), or people claiming we drugged Crystel-Lei to force her to do the movie Pierced for ShadowSlaves (we never allow drugs or alcohol anywhere near a shoot, but she’s flying high on the pain and trying to deal with her needle phobia by sending her mind elsewhere, so she does look pretty spaced out). I never take those very seriously, or even try to stop the rumours really – anyone that actually looks at the site will see they are nonsense, so in the meantime it keeps our clips viral and being discussed, which is fine by me.

I’ve also had more personal threats, mostly from the partners of the girls – never because they were in any way abused or mistreated, but because they had an amazing time and it can sometimes bruise a delicate ego. (Obviously this doesn’t involve any *current* partners)

The most common ‘reservations’ are from people actually on the BDSM scene, who sometimes consider what we do to be in some way ‘wrong’. There is a big section of the scene who are so caught up on safety precautions that they actually expect BDSM to literally be safer than crossing the road. If there is *any* element of risk, no matter how unbelievably unlikely, they will shout ‘dangerous player!’ Usually this is again an ego issue – they want to be seen and respected as responsible and experienced players – but it has little bearing on reality. Such things as a battery shock to the jaw, or slightly discoloured hands in bondage, or intentional and aimed wrap with a whip are far less likely to cause problems than eating peanuts, but it doesn’t stop people publicly slating me for being dangerous.

Bizarrely the same people rarely comment on a breast suspension or waterboarding, which of course really are pretty dangerous. But they are performed by experienced BDSM players with negotiation and informed consent, and all possible precautions in place so I still fail to see an issue. Since when did BDSM have to be safer than skiing or any other extreme and/or contact sport? The mutual approach of a controlled level of danger is a large part of it for me, but that’s a highly unfashionable view on the scene at the moment.

I’m often demonized, but as to what I say about it: As far as I’m concerned, while the girls are happy and keen to remain ShadowSlaves, while I’ve never had a single serious injury (in 25 years) or complaint from any one of them regarding a scene (in 7 years of filming), and while people are still enjoy watching what we’re doing, all is well with my world.

I always thought a bdsm movie would be much more preplanned, staged and acted than it is said here. A real eye opener for me. Very interesting read!

    • H0les_23 says:

Indeed, me too Master Tom, It’s exciting to me when I’m watching because it makes the word of difference when you know what your seeing is as real as it is. :-) I get bored with a lot of porn… I don’t with this!

      Thank You for your comment.

    • Magick says:

I think, having talked to some of our girls who have worked for other sites, they usually are Master Tom. It was kinda something we wanted to move away from.

Certainly, without naming the site, I did some commissioned content work for a well known EU site in 2004 who gave us a whole load of instructions on how they wanted us to fake blood, what make-up to use for cane marks, and even how they normally cut needles to make it look like they were piercing. I just threw away the instructions and did what they asked for for real. They never complained – I assume they just thought I was really good at making it look real LOL. I’m sure that’s an extreme example though.

  2. Gary says:

Stumbled into this on fetlife. I am a fan of painfiles. Been a member many a year. Love to hear direct from the dom. Fantastic work.

Do you have more movies like interrogation planned? It is my favorite s&m movie of all times. How did the slave Nimue like it. Cope with it.

    Gary

    • H0les_23 says:

Thank You Gary. I will see about getting you direct answers, but I do know, while I’m not sure they have another “interrogation” planned the new stuff getting ready to come out surely sounds like it’s going to come at us with the same intensity and excitement! Interrogation was incredible! I loved it!

    • Magick says:

      Hi Gary
      Actually we do!

We haven’t done anything similar since, because shortly afterwards Visa tightened up their rules about scenes that appeared non-consentual. We’ve had a *lot* of stuff pulled from the sites, so we have to be a bit careful. Frankly, it’s a fucking miracle that movie is still there.

That said, both myself and Nimue loved the intensity of that experience, and have been trying to figure a way to do a similar scene without getting hassle from the billers ever since. And we have! Don’t want to give too much away, ’cause we’re really excited about the idea – but it’s all planned for the next time I shoot with her with any notice (lately we’ve been shooting her a lot without any real preparation, because she happened to be there LOL), so will almost ceratainly be in 2011.

    • Nimue says:

How did I like the experience of the interrogation? Well, it is still one of the toughest things I’ve gone through. It was something that Magick knew I was interested in exploring, so when he offered me the opportunity, I of course jumped at the chance. I liked the idea of being pushed as far as I could go, of having “room” to fight back and resist. I liked the idea of being totally scared. I’d worked with Magick only once before, and though I obviously trusted him to stick to my limits and not break me, I instinctively knew that he was capable of pushing me much further than I would go on my own.
I honeslty dont remember a lot of the details of the scene, and I have not watched the video back (other than skipping through the rushes the evening after we shot it……….. it looked seriously scary, and I dont know I would have been able to watch even that if it had been anyone else!) I do remember the emotions that it brought up in me though. I was scared. I was stubborn. I was defiant. I remember the moment that I broke down. Magick had produced a needle and was threatening my face with it. I knew that there was going to be a lot of facial torture involved in the scene, but we hadn’t discussed needles in the face. I knew I hadn’t made it a limit, so it was entirely possible that he was going to pierce my face. What I didn’t know was if I could deal with it if he did. I panicked. I begged and pleaded him not to do it. When his hand moved down to my breasts and then he walked away, I was confused. When I looked down and saw the needle in my breast I felt a huge relief, but still really, really scared.
From then on in the scene, I was compliant. I did as I was told. I moved where I was told to, performed the actions I was told to. But in my head the fight was still going.
The interrogation was based around Magick trying to get one piece of information from me – a name. But I was not going to give in and give him what he wanted. I told him the name was bart simpson at one point, I think!! Even when I gave a vaguely plausable name, it wasn’t the correct one. Rationally we both knew what the name was, but in the moment of the scene, Magick wasn’t sure whether to believe my answers or not.
How did I cope with the scene? That was the tough bit. It took every ounce of personal strength I had. I was NOT going to give in. I was NOT going to give the information out. When I felt myself struggling, I held onto that. I was NOT going to give in. I couldn’t give in. There was no option * not * to cope with it. I glared at Magick, I fought back, I bit him several times, I did whatever it took in that moment to keep some little bit of control to myself. Even when I physically had nothing more to fight with, and broke and gave a name. My mind would not give in and give him the correct answers. I still had that piece of control to “bargain” with – the truth.

      • Gary says:

Thank you very much Nimue and Magick for your detailed replies. I am looking forward with excitement to the new interrogation style movie you have planned. Till then it is fantastic to get such a thorough and interesting picture of what is going on from both perspectives. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it gave me lots of food for thought and ideas.

        Gary

Hey. This a brilliant bdsm interview, had a great time exploring the mind of the sadist behind all these excellent fetish movies.

  5. Miriam says:

Thank you so much for this!

I wish my age and looks could make it possible for me to try all this. The excitement reading this has brought me inside is just overwhelming. I envy the girls and hope they know how lucky they are. I noticed many of the girls come back year after year to do movies. I believe they do.

    • Magick says:

Miriam, it breaks my heart to know we sometimes have to turn people who are genuine down for this just because of age, size or looks :(

It really shouldn’t be an issue, and I don’t honestly think it is for the loyal core of our membership, but to keep the sites running we unfortnately also have to fit into slots that are acceptable for various publicity options, and gallry sites, tubes etc., and their audiences tend to be there for a quick wank rather than to really see genuine scene intensity.

We’ve several times considered ways to open another site that could somehow overcome that limitation, but I think it’s someway off yet – we probably have to bite the bullet and accept that such a remit would probably produce a site that only paid for itself – which wouldn’t be an issue if we had more time to throw at less commercial productions.

Hey you never know, maybe when we’re rich and famous LOL

  6. DarkLou says:

Loved the read AND love the slaves !!!
Fan of EMMA LOUISE and EMILY in particular. Emma is simply outstanding when degraded like in TRASH. Emily is impressive in the TORTURE GAMES on painfiles. Would you consider letting them swap roles because I would LOVE to see Emma Louise in hard torture and EMILY S in a movie similar like TRASH REVULSION THE PIG ?? Dark LOU

    • Magick says:

      Hi DarkLou

Different girls are into and able to get off on different things. I don’t think Emma-Louise would handle the levels of torture Emily Sharpe can, but that said if you check out movies like Matins and Vespers on ShadowSlaves, I’ve certainly pushed her boundries with pain.

That said deep humiliation/degradation for Emily would probably work. I’ve approached it before in scenes like ‘Emily’s Dinner’ on The Pain Files, but yeah, I think we can go quite a way further down that route with her.
